VOLUNTEERING ABROAD
Los Patojos - Jocotenango, Guatemala

In January and May of 2010, I had the privilege to work with Los Patojos (The Little Ones), an after-school program for local youth.

During my time with the program I was responsible for the following:
-
Weekly arts and crafts with a 3rd grade class
-
Maintaining the volunteer blog
-
Evening English language courses for adults
-
Translation of emails and documents

When I returned in May, I brought my mother with me and we led a multi-week lesson on theater. The students wrote scripts, made sock puppets, and presented their plays to the whole program

Through this experience, I learned what reciprocity can truly look like in service learning/work and develop numerous transferable skills:
-
Spanish language (intermediate)
-
Translation
-
Lesson planning and design
-
Community needs-assessment
-
Fundraising and messaging
